Critical Reflection

Module learning

I started this module with two goals in mind, which is to speak more confidently and reduce the use of wimpy words during presentations. However, I had my doubts as I had never overcome them throughout my years in polytechnic. By the end of 13 weeks, I am glad to say that I have improved significantly, even though there are still lots of room for improvement.

I had a lack of knowledge on where to begin but with proper guidance, I was able to present with confidence. I felt that I was able to capture the audience with my presentation skills but I was still pretty stiff and awkward. I appreciate the detailed feedback given by peers and professor as it allowed me to further improve myself.

In addition, emphasising a certain point has always been a challenge to me as I tend to look around during presentations, which leads to difficulty in expressing the importance of my points. Professor Brad gave me a suggestion that by sustaining that contact and pausing momentarily, I would be able to give the impression across to my audience.

Project learning

For the research project, our idea was to implement automation and machine learning into tunnel inspection process. One key takeaway for me would be the disagreement on the writing of technical terms in our discussions as all of us had different approaches to writing the report. This led to team members being unhappy with one another, resulting in a lack of motivation to work.

Communication is the bridge of the gap between clarity and confusion. This experience taught me that disagreements could be reduced by communicating with one another and coming to a consensus. Properly communicating with one another allows them to understand your point of view and allows each other to learn from it. This is highly applicable even to the future,as group discussion is often faced with disagreements no matter what. Hence, with proper communication, such experiences can be avoided.

In conclusion, I am thankful for Professor Brad as he provided detailed feedback after each submission and is always open to answering any personal questions I had. Furthermore, the instructional units provided external links and detailed explanations of skills needed to provide an effective communication. This invaluable skill set I have learned throughout the 13 weeks in this module would definitely aid me during my remaining years of university and in my future workplace.

  1. Dear Justin,

I am happy to read about how much you have learned throughout this module and connect what you have learned to what you will need to do in future. That is, to communicate effectively so as to reduce confusion. It is without a doubt that effective communication is the bridge between confusion and clarity.

Best wishes on the next stage of your journey and I hope we can stay in touch. :)

  2. Thanks, Justin, for posting this fairly detailed, honest critical reflection. I appreciate that you covered both of the assignment areas while focusing on some aspects of the work you did and your experiences. You have also shared a few of the main takeaways. In addition, you've written with this essay with good fluency.

One comment you wrote -- "This led to team members being unhappy with one another, resulting in a lack of motivation to work." -- might have been further explained. I would have liked to know whether that issue was resolved, and if it wasn't, what the course of action was.

In any case, at theis point, I wish you all the best as you continue your learning journey.

    Brad
